15 Hours of Small Group Instruction

* Computer lab utilized for speed reading techniques

The Program Will Teach Each Participant To:

* Utilize sustained silent reading
* Learn to imporve vocabulary skills
* Choose reading mateerial that fostsers motivation to read
* Help students read with a purpose
* Benefit from oral book reading, done in the contest of sharing
* Improve comprehension by removing roadblocks before students read
* Learn specific comprehension skills throuogh reading, main ideas, and details, organizational patterns, predicting outcomes, QAR strategy, cause and effect, inferences and drawing conclusions.
* Explore reading strategies through story-based discussions
* Utilize background experiences (prior knowledge)
* Learn the concept of reading rates through speed reading techniques
* Help students read with critical evaluation

 

Individual Tutoring Instruction
Grades:  All levels-All Subjects

Course Meets:  Hourly basis
Monday and Wednesday 10am-12 pm
Monday through Thursday 1:30-7:00pm

Individual Instruction:  One student per instructor
Programs designed for home-schooled students
 

Course Description
Program is designed to meet specific needs and learning styles of each student.  Individual testing is administered prior to instruction.  On staff certified special education teachers are available.

Computer lab available for enrichment and reinforcement of skills
Cost:  $46.00 per hour (elementary/middle/high school level)

Learning How to Study and Reading Strategies Workshop Grades:  3 - 12
Emphasis on Comprehension, Vocabulary Improvement,and Study Skills Strategies

  "20" Hours of Small Group Instruction
 

Course Meets:  Monday through Friday (3:30 - 5:30 p.m.)

 

Two Week Sessions

 

8 - 10 students per group

 

Classes formed according to grade levels

Course Description
The program will teach each participant to:

Study more effectively, retain information longer, think creatively, set goals and solve learning problems
 

Learn FCAT instructional thinking strategies and learn how to apply FCAT strategies

Practice read/think/explain strategy (FCAT)

Use critical reading in meaningful context

Learn vocabulary strategies

Read and interpret questions accurately

Learn comprehension strategies (Read more effectively and accurately)

Develop flexibility in reading rates

Develop an appreciation of reading through literary genres

Understand individual learning style

Learn organization techniques

Apply time management techniques at school and at home

Read for meaning (Note taking techniques)

Build a systematic way of writing reports

Take tests and score higher on them

Develop memory strategies

Solve his or her own learning problems

Course Description

Developing reading, language, writing, and creativity in young children.  Program explores developmentally appropriate activities which foster creativity, promote literacy, and build self-esteem, including:

Integrated phonics activities

Exploring fun oral language activities

Developing balanced reading and writing approaches

Developing a vocabulary in oral and written language

Engaging children in delightful literature (Books Alive!)

Developing fine and gross motor skills

Developing an understanding that reading for meaning is paramount

Cost: $175.00 per session

Writing Well Workshop Grades:  4 - 10

Course Meets:  Monday through Friday (5:30 - 7:00 p.m.)

Two Week Session

 

Session 2:  July 5th through July 16th

8 - 10 Students per group 

Course Description
Promotes the integration of reading and writing with listening, speaking, and thinking skills.  Program will focus on specific strategies needed for students to become competent writers and break through writers block.

Teaching Pre-Writing Strategies

Working with prompts (The writing situation and directions for writing)

Development of an organizational pattern in writing (Beginning, middle, end, and transitional devices)

Focusing on the assigned topic and development of supporting ideas

Teach 5 paragraph essay

Increasing sentence variety

Correction of spelling, punctuation, capitalization and grammar errors

Teaching expository, narrative and persuasive writing

Teaching editing techniques
Cost:  $150.00 per session

SAT Preparation Grades: High School Students

 

Course meets:  One evening per week (5:30 - 7:30 p.m.)

8 weeks (16 total hours)

8 - 10 students per group

Course Description

Instructors certified in both English and Math.  Test taking techniques taught, progress charted and weaknesses detected and corrected.  Review of skill concepts and question types covering the new SAT test:  analogies, vocabulary in context, sentence completion, comprehension and critical reading and written essay.  Mathematical concepts are covered in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, data analysis, statistics, and probability .

Diagnostic testing included

Reading Mastery Skills Program Grades:  2 - 5
A program designed to give reluctant readers a whole new chance. Intended for challenged readers

Course Meets:  Monday through Friday (3:30 - 5:30 p.m.)

20 hours of small group instruction

Two week sessions

 

Session I:  June 14th - June 25th

 

Session III:  August 2nd- August 13th

8 - 10 students per class

Course Description

A program designed to give reluctant readers a whole new chance.  Program intended for students who are at least three months below grade level.  Program will enhance specific strategies needed for comprehension, decoding and vocabulary development.

Solves common reading problems of little recall, limited attention span, and failure to read and remember

Provides extensive practice in word attack skills (blending practice, decoding, and sounding out)

Builds sight vocabulary through use of books, newspapers, and magazines

Teaches literal and inferential comprehension strategies

Develops higher order thinking and comprehension skills

Introduces the writing process focusing on the various forms of writing

Cost $175.00 per session

Math Workshops - Math Mysteries Solved
Make sure your student has a solid foundation in math!

Grades 3 - 4 - 5

Grades 6 - 7 - 8

Grades 9 - 10

Course Description Intermediate Grades - There will be long division, multiplication, reducing, multiplying, dividing fractions, and a concise understanding of word problems.  (Emphasis will be placed on FCAT grade level curriculum.)  Come be a "summer detective" which will make your child a lifelong math scholar!

Middle and High School Grades - There will be a review of number concepts and operations, measurement, geometry, and spatial sense, algebraic thinking, and data analysis and probability.  Test taking strategies and sample FCAT questions will be reviewed.
